American Academy of Religion, Western Region
The Goddess Studies Unit specifically invites scholarship on the study of women (cis/LGBTQ/non-binary inclusive) and goddesses in religion and mythology. We promote interdisciplinary critique from the fields of psychology, religion and mythology, history, anthropology, gender studies, critical race theory, pop culture, musicology, and sociology in order to highlight these often underrepresented narratives. We also recognize that many of these figures have been marginalized, suppressed, and/or colonized in culture. Additionally, we are interested in how these figures may have subverted racial/gender/cultural norms in history and how they have been re-appropriated, reclaimed, reinvented, or re-interpreted in the modern era.
We are fortunate to be in a very active region that includes California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii and the Pacific Islands, which makes our conferences alive with ideas that range from the traditional to the cutting edge of our profession.
Next year's conference: Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA from March 10-12, 2017.
The overall theme of the 2017 Conference is Religion, Race, and Racism.
